Dorothy, a young girl rendered unconscious in a whirlwind, awakens in Munchkinland to meet a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion. Together, they follow the Yellow-brick Road in search of the famous Wizard of Oz who may grant them their deepest wishes. On the way they encounter Good and Evil which help and hinder their search. Eventually, they reach the Wizard (who proves something of a surprise) and all their wishes are granted. L. Frank Baum's children's story, written in the early years of the 20th century, had long been an American favourite - a fairytale about an ordinary girl from Kansas. With MGM's 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz was set to become a world-wide classic that is as appealing to audiences today as it was over 60 years ago.
