The 70th annual Tony Awards took place in New York last night, with the entire evening dedicated to those who died in the Orlando shooting at a LGBT nightclub. The awards were hosted by James Corden, who opened the evening with a reminder that theatre is “a place where every race, creed, sexuality and gender is equal, is embraced, and is loved. Hate will not win.” Poignant words with a firm message from the Broadway community.

Corden’s opening number was a real treat. Focusing on a little kid – “We’ll call him James,” who would go the the theatre as a child with his parents and, as he watched the action on stage, he’d think “That could be me up there.” Corden then took us on a whirlwind tour of musical theatre and reminded us of his own talent in the genre. It seemed just the perfect lift that we all needed; it was a complete joy from beginning to end. Watch it below.

Onto the winners then, and it’s little surprise that Hamilton won big. The show triumphed in 11 categories, falling one Tony short of the record set by The Producers, but it does beat Billy Elliot and A Chorus Line, who both won 10 each. The list of Hamilton awards include Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical (for Leslie Odom Jr.), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Renee Elise Goldsberry), and Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Daveed Diggs.

Collecting his award for Best Original Score, Lin-Manuel Miranda gave a deeply emotional acceptance speech in the form of a sonnet during which he praised his wife and reminded us all that “love is love is love is love.” You can watch a clip of it (via Entertainment Tonight) below. The full list of winners can be found below.
