• Theatre Royal Stratford East to get new building

The Theatre Royal Stratford East has announced plans to build a temporary theatre, The Red Crate, opposite the current theatre in Theatre Square. The new venue will seat 220.

The Red CrateThe new eco-venue will be a sister building to the National Theatre’s temporary theatre, designed by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins. It will adjoin the existing adjacent empty catering unit, which we will transform into a fresh café / bar, as well as front of house facilities. The new venue is planned to open in 2015 and will be in place for an intended period of 10 years.

Launching their £4.5m capital funding campaign today, the Artistic Director, Kerry Michael, said “We hope that you will be excited as we are about the new possibilities The Red Crate presents for us and for Stratford. Seeing a show in The Red Crate will be a very different experience, which we hope you will love. As always, we will want talk to you and hear your views and ideas. So, when we launch our public consultation in the coming weeks, please do get involved and have your say.”
